Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia

FRBP

As one of the twelve federal reserves in the country, these reserves make up the Federal Reserve System- or the nation’s central bank. The Federal Reserve System works to ensure the strength and integrity of the economy and financial system. In their own words, The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia’s basic mission is to create the financial conditions that foster economic growth: stable prices, sound banking practices, and a reliable payments system.

We were tasked with a redesign of their site— in both the content and design categories. Within the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, there are multiple smaller organizations all putting out data and insights, making it hard to find what you’re looking for. Our main goal was to provide them with a clean, impactful digital experience through smart branding and intuitive, interaction design.

Through various rounds of design exploration, we decided to organize their content based on four main research topics. We did this by assigning each topic a highlight color, and then used them as indicators on different types of components such as navigation, cards, and right rail sections with the hope that, over time, users will be able to create a visual association with different subject matter. The whole design system delicately balances authority and personality through juxtaposed colors, typography and imagery.

This was a really interesting project-- a big part of that being that we worked in an agile way, constantly working with UX designers, data visualization specialists, and developers. Rebranding an institute of this size was no easy feat, and overcoming different content and design challenges makes me proud of where we ended up. I learned first-hand all that goes into building such a robust component library, and seeing a brand come to life through the lens of a designer, as well as a developer, definitely taught me that a designer’s work is not always done after designing a component, page, or section.
